Topping
  • 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  1. In a bowl, combine sugars.
  2. Mix in the cinnamon and walnuts.
Cake
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • pinch salt
  • 1 cup butter at room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 large apples, peeled and sliced

Method

  1. Oven to 350. Butter a 13×9 pan.
  2. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  3. In an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until fluffy; Add eggs and vanilla.
  4. On lowest setting, alternate beating flour mix and sour cream into batter.
  5. Spread half the batter in the pan. Sprinkle with topping. Cover with apple. Sprinkle with topping. Spread remaining batter on top; finish with topping.
  6. Bake for 40 minutes, until a toothpick in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool on a rack for 30 minutes.
